William Caxton (v. 1422 dans le comté de Kent - v. 1491), prototypographe anglais.

Biographie

Après avoir séjourné quelque temps en Flandre, et y avoir fait le commerce avec succès, William Caxton part à Cologne apprendre l'art d'imprimer, se perfectionne à Bruges auprès de Colard Mansion, et retourne en Angleterre vers 1472 y introduire "l'art sublime".

Il publie en 1474 son premier livre, le Jeu d'échecs moralisé (en anglais). Il donne en 1481 le Miroir du Monde, avec gravures. En 1484, il publie une traduction anglaise du Livre pour l'enseignement de ses filles de Geoffroy de La Tour-Landry.

Ses éditions sont fort recherchées des bibliophiles.
