Väinämöinen est le personnage principal de l'épopée finnoise, le Kalevala, rassemblée par Elias Lönnrot, mais il était avant cela (à l'époque païenne) une divinité de la mer[1].
Souvent appelé par son diminutif « Väinö » ou désigné par l'expression « le barde sans âge », il est le fils de la vierge Ilmatar, de laquelle il naquit par sa propre volonté alors qu'elle était enceinte de lui pendant 700 ans et après une gestation de plus de trente ans.
Il est le premier habitant de la terre et c'est lui qui ensemence la terre et fait pousser les plantes sur le sol de Finlande, aidé en cela par Pellervo, et par Ukko, le dieu des dieux.
Il est considéré comme le plus grand barde et l'un des meilleurs magiciens (la parole étant magie).
