Väinämöinen est le personnage principal de l'épopée finnoise, le Kalevala, rassemblée par Elias Lönnrot.

Souvent appelé par son diminutif « Väinö » ou désigné par l'expression « le barde sans âge », il est le fils d'Ilmatar, de laquelle il naquit par sa propre volonté après une gestation de plus de trente ans.

Il est le premier habitant de la terre et c'est lui qui ensemence la terre et fait pousser les plantes sur le sol de Finlande, aidé en cela par Pellervo, et par Ukko, le dieu des dieux.

Il est considéré comme le plus grand barde et l'un des meilleurs magiciens (la parole étant magie).
