Tollywood est un mot-valise formé sur le modèle de Bollywood à partir du terme Hollywood et de l'initial T désignant deux aires linguistiques régionales distinctes dans la production cinématographique indienne :
- le cinéma bengalî, issu des studios de Tollygunge, à Kolkata, au Bengale-Occidental, rendu célèbre par les réalisations intellectuelles et politiques de Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy, Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, Rituparno Ghosh et Gautam Ghose.
- le cinéma télougou, produit à Hyderhâbâd, dans l'État d'Andhra Pradesh, peut-être moins connu mais ayant une production bien plus nombreuse et dont les principaux réalisateurs sont Bapu, YVS Chowdary, B. Gopal, Puri Jagannadh, Jandhyala, L. V. Prasad, Adurthi Subba Rao, V. Madhusudhana Rao, Dasari Narayana Rao, K. Raghavendra Rao, Singeetam Srinivasa Rao, S. S. Rajamouli, Kodi Ramakrishna, A.
