Tirthankar

Dans le jaïnisme, un tirthankar ("faiseur de gué") ou tirthankara, est un homme qui atteint l'"illumination", au sens de la connaissance parfaite, par l'ascétisme. Un tirthankar devient un jina s'il parvient à maîtriser totalement la colère, la fierté, le mensonge, le désir etc. Un tirthankar fondera alors un "tirth", c'est-à-dire une communauté qui jouera le rôle de "gué" à travers "le fleuve de l'humaine misère".
