Thonmi Sambhota ou Thume Sambota (VIIe siècle) fut un ministre de Songtsen Gampo, le 33e roi du Tibet. Il créa l'écriture tibétaine à partir de l'alphabet indien devanâgarî.
Songtsen Gampo envoya 17 étudiants tibétains en Inde pour maîtriser ses langues et à travers elles, mieux comprendre les textes bouddhistes. Thonmi Sambhota, le plus célèbre de ces étudiants, ayant maîtrisé le sanscrit et ayant été initié au bouddhisme, est retourné au Tibet. En se fondant sur des manuscrits en Brahmi et Gupta, il a conçu l'alphabet et la grammaire tibétaine. Pour la première fois dans l'histoire du Tibet, plusieurs textes bouddhistes importants en sanscrit ont été traduits en tibétain par Thonmi Sambhota[1].
