Christian Albert Theodor Billroth (26 avril 1829-6 février 1894) est un chirurgien originaire d'Allemagne et père fondateur de la chirurgie abdominale. Il a été le premier à réussir une ablation d'un cancer de l'estomac en 1881. Il a entre autres exercé à Zurich et à Vienne. Musicien passionné, virtuose du violon, c'était aussi un ami intime de Brahms
Billroth a déclaré en 1880, que "Le chirurgien qui tenterait de suturer une blessure du coeur perdrait le respect de ses collègues".
