The Unknown Soldier est une chanson des Doors, parue en 1968 sur leur troisième album, Waiting for the Sun. Elle fut le premier single tiré de l'album, atteignant une décevante 39e aux États-Unis[1]. Ses paroles évoquent la guerre du Viêt Nam et la vision qu'en donnaient les médias à l'époque.Des paroles telles que "Breakfast where the news is read/Television children fed/ unborn living, living dead/bullets strike the helmet's head" concernent la manière dont les nouvelles de la guerre a été présentée dans les foyers méricains.
Au milieu de la chanson, The Doors produisent les sons de ce qui semble être une exécution ; pendant le concert Robby Krieger pointe sa guitare vers Morrison comme un fusil, le batteur John Densmore simulait un coup de feu en produisant une forte rimshot, en appuyant sur le bord de la caisse claire, par conséquent, en brisant les baguettes, Morrison tombait à terre en criant. Après cette section, les versets de la chanson se terminent avec la célébration extatique de Morrison chantant la fin de la guerre finie. Dans la version studio de la chanson, on peut entende les bruits de foules et de cloches. La sortie du single est se positionna quatrième Haut de la bande 40 hit aux Etats-Unis, atteignant le numéro 39 sur le Billboard Hot 100.
