The Innocent Criminals était le nom du groupe qui accompagnait Ben Harper en studio comme en tournée. Il s'agit également du nom de son label. Leur style de musique se situait entre le blues, le funk, le rock, la soul et le reggae.
Origine
D'après Juan Nelson c'est Ben Harper qui a proposé ce nom.
Ce nom fait référence à la présomption d'innocence aux États-Unis et à la différence de traitement entre les noirs et les blancs. Un présumé innocent noir comparaissant devant un tribunal n'est pas forcément coupable mais est obligatoirement un criminel innocent...
Ainsi depuis son album Welcome to the Cruel World en 1994 Ben Harper a toujours accompagné le label Virgin Records de son propre label Innocent Criminal.
Mais c'est en 1997 sur The Will to Live que l'on voit pour la première fois apparaitre Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals.
