The Independent (littéralement, L'Indépendant) est un quotidien généraliste britannique de langue anglaise, fondé en 1986, de format tabloïd mais de contenu sérieux. Son édition dominicale est titrée The Independent on Sunday.

Activités

Le lectorat moyen du journal est censé être constitué de membres des classes moyennes, plutôt orientés au centre et au centre gauche.

Histoire

Le journal, originellement publié en format broadsheet (grand format), est passé en septembre 2003 au format tabloïd, terme auquel la rédaction du journal préfère celui de « compact », censé différencier qualitativement The Independent des journaux populaires habituellement publié au format tabloïd.

En avril 2005, The Independent a confié à une agence graphique sise à Barcelone le soin de réorganiser la maquette du journal. Il en a résulté une mise en page et une allure générale qui, par certains points, ne sont pas sans rappeler celle du quotidien français Libération.

Début 2010, le journal a été racheté pour une livre symbolique par l'oligarque russe Alexandre Lebedev et qui doit recevoir du vendeur 10,3 millions d'euros pour épurer les dettes.
