The Dreaming (1982) est le 4e album de Kate Bush.
La chanteuse y crée un nouveau paysage sonore, souvent inquiétant.
Kate Bush était dans la première moitié de la vingtaine à la composition de cet album, et tendait à chercher en dehors d'elle-même de nouvelles sources d'inspiration. Elle s'est appuyée sur les vieux films policiers ("There Goes A Tenner"), un documentaire sur la Guerre du Vietnam ("Pull Out The Pin"), les revendications des Aborigènes australiens ("The Dreaming"), la vie de l'illusionniste Harry Houdini, et le film de Stanley Kubrick fondé sur le roman de Stephen King Shining ("Get Out Of My House").
Quelques titres cependant appartiennent à une inspiration plus personnelle : le single "Sat In Your Lap" explore le doute sur soi opposé à une confiance en soi triomphale, tandis que "Leave It Open" parle du besoin de laisser s'exprimer les parties les plus sombres de sa personnalité (dans l'exigence plus générale de maintenir son esprit ouvert).
