Terrace est une ville du nord-ouest de la Colombie-Britannique, située entre Prince Ruppert et Prince George.
La majorité de ses habitants sont les Tsimshians , peuple autochtone de la côte du nord-ouest du Pacifique.
Au recensement de 2006, on y a dénombré une population de 11 320[1] habitants.
Situation
Terrace est encerclée par une vallée et une forêt tropicale humide côtière-intérieure hybride sur la Rivière Skeena, près de son l'embouchure sur l'Océan Pacifique. Les forêts luxuriantes dans le secteur sont principalement constituées de cèdres, de ciguës et de sapins. Les dépôts des glaciers , au cours de milliers d'années ont produit des terrasses naturelles ou "des bancs" autour de la ville, lui donnant son nom.
Histoire
En 1862, la variole a annihilé 80 % de la population Tsimshian. D'autres épidémies ont ravagé leurs communautés pendant plusieurs années.
En 1880, un missionnaire anglican nommé William Duncan, avec un groupe de Tsimshians, a demandé le transfert de la population sur l'Île Annette, sous possession américaine. Après l'approbation, ce groupe a fondé Nouveau Metlakatla en l'Alaska. William Duncan a demandé plus tard le statut de réserve pour la communauté Tsimshian.
