Un "shiv" (mot d'origine roumaine : chiv) est un terme d'argot (américain) désignant tout objet tranchant ou pointu utilisé comme un couteau. Les couteaux et poignards sont eux-mêmes compris dans la famille des "shiv". En pratique, ce terme est généralement utilisé pour désigner une arme tranchante improvisée. Les "shiv" sont très fréquents dans les prisons partout dans le monde. Ils sont fabriqués de façon très diverse : [[tournevis[[, ouvre-lettre, morceaux de métal, de verre ou de plastique aiguisés, lames de rasoirs ou de cutters fixées dans le manche des brosses à dents, il y a même certains prisonniers qui taillent les os des côtelettes de porcs pour en faire des "shiv".
Dans sa langue d'origine, "shiv" désigne aussi bien l'objet que l'action d'utiliser cet objet contre quelqu'un. Ce mot est alors utilisé à la manière d'un verbe : "to shiv [someone]"
