Dans l'œuvre de J.R.R. Tolkien, Arachne (Shelob en anglais, pour « she », marque du féminin, et « lob », qui signifie « araignée » en ancien anglais (via le latin « locusta »). Donc, littéralement,l'« Araignée -Femelle »), est un être malfaisant en forme d'araignée géante qui garde Cirith Ungol dans son antre de Torech Ungol. Elle est considérée comme l'ultime descendante d'Ungoliant.

Son antre est parsemé de parois de toiles qu'elle tisse et que seule une épée elfique peut couper. Cette créature aux multiples yeux a l'habitude d'empoisonner (ou d'endormir) ses victimes, notamment des Orques qui s'aventurent dans la caverne, ainsi que des prisonniers qui lui sont sciemment envoyés. Sauron, maître du Mordor, a toujours toléré sa présence parce qu'elle gardait sa frontière et parce que les Orques étaient des esclaves nombreux et de peu de valeur.

Elle apparaît à la fin du deuxième tome du Seigneur des Anneaux, où son attaque contre Frodon Sacquet et Samsagace Gamegie amène ce dernier à continuer seul la quête pour détruire l'Anneau unique après l'avoir peut-être blessée mortellement.
