Samuel Ajayi Crowther, (v. 1809, 31 décembre 1891) premier évêque anglican noir du Nigeria méridional, consacré dans la cathédrale de Cantorbéry le 29 juin 1864. Il compte parmi les plus ardents propagateurs de l’influence européenne, appliquant avec zèle le triptyque britannique ; commerce, christianisme, colonisation[réf. nécessaire]. Cet ancien esclave affranchi, mué en parangon de l’élite intellectuelle, défend la dignité africaine, encourage le peuple à prendre son destin en main pourvu que cette promotion passe par la conversion au christianisme.
