L'astroturfing en anglais américain est un néologisme pour les campagnes de relation publiques formelles en politique et publicité qui cherchent à créer l'impression d'un comportement « grassroots » (« qui prend ses racines dans l'herbe » en anglais) spontané, en référence à l'herbe artificielle, utilisée dans les stades, appelée AstroTurf.
Le but de ce type de campagne est de déguiser des efforts d'entité politiques ou commerciales en réaction de public indépendant à une entité politique (un politicien, un groupe politique, un produit, un service ou un événement). Les astroturfers tentent d'orchestrer des actions qui semblent provenir d'individus divers et dispersés géographiquement et utilisent des méthodes de désinformation. L'astroturfing peut être pratiqué par une personne seule selon un agenda préétabli ou par des groupes professionnels organisés, ayant des appuis financiers de grosses entreprises ou d'organisations activistes ou non-lucratives. Très souvent, l‘organisation est gérée par des consultants politiques spécialisés dans la recherche en opposition.
