Raymond Bernard Cattell, né le 20 mars 1905 et décédé le 2 février 1998 est un psychologue britannique et américain. Auteur ou co-auteur de 55 ouvrages et de 500 articles[réf. nécessaire], il a théorisé l'existence de deux formes d'intelligence à la base des capacités cognitives humaines : l'intelligence fluide et l'intelligence cristalisée. Ses travaux l'ont conduit à dénombrer seize traits de personnalité (personality factors) mesurables.

Polémiques

Cattell a été critiqué pour l'intérêt qu'il portait à l'eugénisme de Francis Galton et au Pioneer Fund, une association raciste américaine qui a publié plusieurs de ses textes dans la revue Mankind Quarterly. En 1997, l'Association américaine de psychologie, qui voulait remettre à Cattell une médaille d'or pour l'ensemble de son œuvre dans le domaine de la psychologie, a conduit une enquête pour vérifier l'exactitude des reproches faits à Cattell. Avant que ces démarches n'aboutissent, ce dernier a publiquement déclaré qu'il abhorait le racisme[1] et a, par avance, refusé le prix. Il est décédé peu après.

Le professeur William H. Tucker a publié un ouvrage[2] dans lequel il accuse Cattell d'avoir (en 1937) tenu en grande sympathie la politique raciale nazie.
