Artists' Rifles

L’Artists' Rifles était un régiment de volontaires qui regroupait des artistes de toutes origines, désireux de combattre pour le Royaume-Uni.

Origine

Ce corps, créé en 1859, fut formé par un étudiant en arts, Edward Sterling, suite à l'attentat d'Orsini contre Napoléon III (pour lequel la responsabilité du Royaume-Uni avait été évoqué, ce qui déclencha la crainte d'une attaque de la France).

Il comprenait des artistes professionnels, peintres, sculpteurs, musiciens, acteurs, architectes… Il vit le jour le 28 février 1860 en tant que 38e corps de volontaires fusiliers (d'artistes) du Middlesex, dont le quartier général se trouvait à Burlington House.
