Rahul Gandhi, fils de Rajiv (ex-premier ministre) et Sonia Gandhi, né le 19 juin 1970, est le petit-fils d'Indira Gandhi (ex-premier ministre) et l'arrière-petit-fils de Jawaharlal Nehru (ex-premier ministre) et est membre du Parti du Congrès.
En mai 2004, il a conquis un siège de député dans la circonscription d'Amethi, fief électoral de sa famille en Uttar Pradesh. Sa sœur Priyanka a supervisé sa campagne.
Rahul Gandhi devient secrétaire général du Parti du Congrès en mars 2008.
