Société du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus
La Société du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus a été fondée en 1800 par Madeleine-Sophie Barat (1779, Joigny dans l'Yonne - 1865) pour l'éducation des jeunes filles. Ses membres sont appelés Sœurs du Sacré-Cœur (autrefois, Dames du Sacré-Cœur).
Madeleine-Sophie Barat, fille de tonnelier, prend elle-même, à 22 ans, la direction du premier pensionnat en 1801, à Amiens. Le nombre de maisons s'accroissant rapidement (65 en 1850), elle devient supérieure générale de la Société dont elle établit la maison-mère à Paris, dans l'hôtel Biron (actuellement, musée Rodin).
Dès 1818, cette Société a été implantée en Amérique du Nord par Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769-1852), canonisée par Jean-Paul II en 1988.
Madeleine-Sophie Barat a été canonisée en 1925.
La Société du Sacré-Cœur de Jésus compte 3 710 membres répartis en 507 communautés dans 44 pays.
