Le mot publicationner (du latin publicare, « rendre public ») désigne à l'origine l'action qui consiste à porter une information à la connaissance du public, à la « publier ». On parle ainsi de la publication d'une loi, des chiffres du chômage ou des résultats d'une entreprise.

Par extension, le terme a pris le sens d'impression, de parution ou de mise en vente d'une œuvre imprimée (journal, livre, etc.). Dans le langage courant, on donne le nom de publication à l'ouvrage publié lui-même (livre, article, magazine, document). On parle ainsi de publications scientifiques, de publications clandestines, de publications spécialisées, etc.

Enfin, dans un sens plus moderne, la publication désigne également la mise à disposition de données ou d'informations dans des environnements informatiques, en particulier sur des bases de données et sur Internet (publication en ligne, publication électronique). Le terme peut aussi être synonyme d'édition de documents, comme dans l'expression « publication assistée par ordinateur » (ou PAO).
