Le président pro tempore du Sénat des États-Unis (anglais : President pro tempore of the United States Senate) est le deuxième plus important personnage du Sénat et le sénateur de plus haut rang. Le vice-président des États-Unis est le président ex officio du Sénat et donc la personnalité de plus haut rang de cette institution; en son absence le président pro tempore préside la chambre.
Le président pro tempore est élu par le Sénat, la tradition veut qu'il (ou elle) soit le doyen d'âge du parti majoritaire de cette assemblée. En temps ordinaire, ni le vice-président des États-Unis, ni le président pro tempore ne président effectivement les sessions du Sénat, à l'exception d'événements particuliers, cette tâche est en général déléguée à de jeunes sénateurs du parti majoritaire. Après le vice-président des États-Unis, le président de la Chambre des représentants, le président pro tempore est troisième dans la ligne de succession à la présidence des États-Unis.
L'actuel président pro tempore du Sénat est Robert Byrd (D-Virginie-Occidentale). Il a remplacé à ce poste Ted Stevens (R -Alaska), qui occupa cette fonction du 3 janvier 2003 au 3 janvier 2007.
Le salaire annuel du président pro tempore pour 2006 était de 183 500 $ .
