Le prépublication est la publication, sous différentes formes (feuilleton, économique, abrégée, etc.) d'une œuvre littéraire avant sa parution en tant que livre.

Bandes dessinées

On prépublie ainsi des bandes dessinées dans la presse quotidienne, hebdomadaire, nationale ou régionale.

Les périodiques de bandes dessinées publie ainsi des bandes dessinées qui, si leur popularité (la demande!) le justifie, sont ensuite publiées en album.

Certains éditeurs et des particuliers prépublie même des bandes dessinées en ligne (Internet).

Publications scientifiques

Il existe deux types de publications scientifiques : la « prépublication » et le « postdocument ».

Les prépublications (ou preprints) sont des articles qui n’ont pas été contrôlés par les pairs (comité scientifique ou comité de lecture). Il s’agit de la « version auteur ».

Les postdocuments (ou postprints) ont été certifiés par les pairs et peuvent faire l’objet d’une publication dans une revue scientifique. C’est la « version publiée ».

Dans les deux cas il peut s'agir de communication de congrès, thèse, articles, habilitation à diriger des recherches, chapitre d’ouvrage, actes de colloques, publications dans des revues scientifiques sans comités de lecture, etc.
