péta
péta (symbole P) est le préfixe du système international d'unités (SI) qui représente 1015 soit un billiard (un million de milliards).
Adopté en 1975, il provient du grec πέντε, cinq, car égal à 10005. Bien qu'officiellement épelé peta, l'usage a consacré l'épellation péta.
En informatique, le Po ou péta-octet (en anglais PB, pour petabyte) représente souvent incorrectement 10245 octets (et non un million de milliards). Voir préfixe binaire.
À titre d'exemple, en juillet 2004, l'ensemble des fichiers mis à disposition par les utilisateurs des réseaux pair à pair représentait quelques dizaines de péta-octets (une quarantaine à une cinquantaine environ).[1]
