Le Parcheesi est l'adaptation américaine du jeu indien Pachisi.
John Hamilton l'a tout d'abord enregistré sous le nom de Patchessi en 1867. En 1870, il a vendu les droits à un éditeur de jeux de société de New York qui deviendra par la suite Selchow and Richter et qui renregistrera la marque en 1874. Le jeu reste toujours un grand succès aux États-Unis. En France, on joue plutôt à un jeu très proche, le Jeu des petits chevaux
Le Parcheesi est assez différent du Jeu des petits chevaux, malgré une ressemblance des tabliers de jeu.
- Le Parcheesi se joue avec deux dés sur un circuit plus long : soixante-huit cases au lieu de cinquante-six.
- Seize de ces cases sont des cases de refuge où les pions ne peuvent pas être capturés par un pion adverse.
- Pour sortir de la base, il faut faire cinq, avec un dé ou les deux dés.
- Deux pions d'un même joueur qui sont sur la même case forment un barrage infranchissable sauf exception.
- etc.
Les règles du Parcheesi sont beaucoup plus élaborées et tactiques que celles de son cousin français. Ce qui explique que le jeu connaisse toujours le succès, même auprès de publics adultes.
