Nomina sacra (au singulier : nomen sacrum) signifie "noms sacrés" en latin.
Cette expression est utilisée pour désigner des traditions selon lesquelles on abrégeait certains noms divins ou sacrés fréquemment utilisés dans l'écriture sainte de langue grecque. Le livre de Bruce Metzger Manuscripts of the Greek Bible recense 15 Nomina sacra dans les papyri grecs : les termes grecs signifiant Dieu, Seigneur, Jésus, Christ, Fils, Esprit, David, croix, Marie, Père, Israël, Sauveur, Homme, Jérusalem, et ciel. Ces abréviations étaient surlignées.
Il existe une controverse pour savoir si ces nomina sacra étaient des solutions de facilité[1] ou s'ils ont un caractère sacré[2].
IHS ou JHS christogramme de la chrétienté occidentale
Utilisés au IIIe siècle, les noms sacrés étaient parfois raccourcis par contraction dans des inscriptions chrétiennes, et il en résultait des séquences de lettres grecques comme IH (iota-eta), IC (iota-sigma), ou IHC (iota-eta-sigma) pour Jésus (en grec Iēsous), et XC (chi-sigma), XP (chi-ro) et XPC (chi-rho-sigma) pour Christ (en grec Christos). Ici "C" représente la forme médiévale lunaire du sigma grec; sigma peut aussi être transcrit phonétiquement en alphabet latin, ce qui donne IHS et XPS[3].
