On appelle neurite tout prolongement du corps cellulaire d'un neurone. Il peut s'agir d'un axone ou d'une dendrite. Ce terme est fréquemment utilisé dans le cadre de la biologie du développement en parlant de cellules nerveuses immatures, notamment en culture, car il est alors difficile de distinguer les deux types de prolongements. A l'étape dite de croissance neuritique, les neurites sont les 2 excroissances partant du corps cellulaire des jeunes neurones et qui vont se différencier par la suite pour donner, d'un côté, l'axone et de l'autre, par ramification, les dendrites.
