Un inselberg (de l'allemand signifiant « montagne-île ») est une colline ou une petite montagne isolée qui s'élève abruptement depuis une légère déclivité ou une plaine virtuellement plate.
Formation
Les inselbergs sont typiquement des formations géologiques des tropiques, mais peuvent se rencontrer sous d'autres latitudes. Ils tirent leur origine de l'élévation — par un processus volcanique ou non — d'une roche résistante à l'érosion contenue à l'intérieur d'une roche plus tendre. Lorsque la roche moins résistante est érodée et forme une plaine, la roche interne forme une montagne isolée.
Nom
Le terme a été conçu pour décrire les formations de ce type, abondantes dans le sud de l'Afrique.
En Afrique de l'Est et en Afrique du Sud, le terme kopje est également utilisé. Aux États-Unis, on rencontre surtout le terme monadnock, terme qui dérive d'un mot amérindien de la langue Abenaki.
