Michael Polanyi (1891-1976) était un polymathe et épistémologue hongrois qui s'est intéressé à la chimie, la philosophie et à l'économie. Penseur libéral, il a participé au colloque Walter Lippmann en 1938 et était membre fondateur de la Société du Mont Pèlerin en 1947.
C'est le frère de Karl Polanyi (1886-1964), l’auteur du livre La grande transformation. Nés à Budapest, les deux frères ont fréquenté le cercle Galilée et le Szellemkek (les Esprits). Dans les années trente, ils vont s’éloigner l’un de l’autre suite notamment à la visite de Michael en URSS en 1933 et à la publication d’un écrit où il attaque la politique économique soviétique.
Il a développé le concept de « tacit knowledge » qui veut que « nous connaissons plus que nous ne pouvons dire ». Pour lui, les savoirs tacites ne peuvent pas être codifiés ; ils ne peuvent être transmis que par apprentissage et expérience personnelle.
Son fils, John Charles Polanyi, obtint le prix Nobel de chimie.
