Maya Angelou, de son vrai nom Marguerite Johnson^[1], est une poétesse, écrivain, actrice et militante afro-américaine née le 4 avril 1928 à Saint-Louis, Missouri (États-Unis). Elle est une figure importante du mouvement américain pour les droits civiques. Elle est devenue une figure emblématique de la vie artistique et politique outre-Atlantique^[2] où ses livres sont au programme des écoles^[1].

Biographie

Elle naît à Saint-Louis dans le Missouri et encore bébé part avec ses parents et son frère aîné en Californie. Mais comme de nombreuses familles noires ayant émigré au nord ou à l'ouest, les parents font face à la pauvreté et ne peuvent subvenir aux besoins de leurs enfants. Ils sont envoyés chez leurs grand-parents à Stamps dans l'Arkansas, un État du Sud alors profondément raciste. Elle retourne plus tard en Californie où, bonne élève, sa mère l'inscrit dans une école privée, première noire à la fréquenter^[1].

Avant ses 20 ans, Maya Angelou a travaillé comme cuisinière, danseuse et chanteuse en Californie et a élevé seule son fils Guy. Elle s'installe ensuite à Harlem.

Elle épouse le Sud-africain Vusumzi Make, compagnon de lutte de Nelson Mandela et vit quelques années en Égypte puis au Ghana^[3] où elle côtoie Malcom X^[1]. Elle rentre aux États-Unis en 1965 pour travailler avec lui lorsque celui-ci est assassiné^[1]. Elle est ensuite la coordinatrice de la section new-yorkaise de l'organisation de Martin Luther King^[3]. Elle va se mettre à écrire après son assassinat (Martin Luther King est abattu alors qu'elle fête son quarantième anniversaire)^[1], poussée par l'écrivain de Harlem James Baldwin.

Elle a beaucoup voyagé et parle anglais, français^[1], espagnol, italien et arabe.

Depuis 1981, elle vit à Winston-Salem en Caroline du Nord où elle tient la chaire d'études américaines à l'université de Wake Forest^[1]. Elle possède également une résidence à Harlem, et participa en tant qu'oratrice à la Million Man March de 1995.

Maya Angelou est connue pour ses œuvres autobiographiques I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) et All God's Children Need Traveling Shoes (1986). Son recueil de poèmes Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water Fore I Die (1971) a été proposé pour le prix Pulitzer. En 1993, Maya Angelou a lu son poème On the Pulse of Morning à la demande de Bill Clinton lors de son discours inaugural. De plus, en 2008, comme de nombreux leaders afro-américains historiques elle a apporté son soutien à Hillary Clinton lors des primaires du Parti démocrate pour l'élection présidentielle américaine avant de se ranger du côté de Barack Obama.

Elle a influencé de nombreuses personnalités noires américaines, dont la journaliste Oprah Winfrey qui fait souvent référence à elle,

Ses premiers ouvrages traduits en français ont été publiés en 2008 par l'éditeur canadien Les Allusifs avec Tant que je serai noire (sept 2008) et Je sais pourquoi chante l'oiseau en cage (nov 2008).
