Margaret Archer est professeur de sociologie à l'université de Warwick, depuis 1973.
Elle est l'un des théoriciens les plus influents dans la tradition du « réalisme critique ».
Au XIIe congrès mondial de sociologie (Madrid – 1990), elle a été élue comme première présidente de l'Association sociologique internationale (ASA), est un des membres fondateurs de l'académie pontificale des sciences sociales et de l'« Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences ».
Elle est aussi administratrice du « Centre pour le réalisme critique ».
