Économie
Ancien grand port du royaume de Hyder Ali, Mangalore est aujourd'hui un centre d'exportation de café et de noix de cajou. Elle attire de nombreux étudiants et abrite une importante communauté catholique remontant à l'arrivée des Portugais en 1526. La ville pourrait prendre le nom de Mangalooru (ou Mangaluru), ancien nom local, comme l'a proposé l'administration locale le 1er novembre 2006.
La ville est desservie par l'aéroport international de Mangalore (code AITA : IXE • code OACI : VOML). En 2010, le vol 812 Air India Express s'écrase à Mangalore, faisant 158 morts sur 166 passagers.
