Kuensel était le seul hebdomadaire du Bhoutan jusqu'en avril 2006, quand il fut rejoint par The Bhutan Times. Fondé en 1967 comme journal interne du gouvernement, il devint un hebdomadaire national en 1986. Kuensel est publié en trois langues: le dzongkha (la langue officielle du pays), l'anglais et le népalais. Il devient autonome en 1992, mais continue à recevoir des subsides du gouvernement. En 1996, le Kuensel passe de douze à seize pages pour ses éditions en dzongkha et en anglais, et de huit à douze pages pour son édition en népalais.
