Russell est la première ville portuaire fondée en Nouvelle-Zélande par les Européens.
La ville est située sur le rivage de la Bay of Islands, dans le nord de l'île du Nord de la Nouvelle-Zélande.
Elle abritait au recensement de 2006 816 habitants, soit 12 de plus qu’en 2001.
La plupart des aménagements et activités de cette petite ville dépendent du tourisme de vacances.
