Khmelnytskyï (en ukrainien : Хмельницький) ou Khmelnitski (en russe : Хмельницкий) est une ville d’Ukraine occidentale et la capitale administrative de l’oblast de Khmelnytskyï. Elle est située à 276 km au sud-ouest de Kyïv. Sa population s’élève à 258 300 habitants en 2007.
Histoire
La ville fut fondée en 1493 sous le nom de Proskouriv (en russe : Proskourov). En 1954, elle fut renommée Khmelnytskyï pour le tricentenaire du traité de Pereïaslav négocié par Bohdan Khmelnytsky et qui arracha une grande partie de l’Ukraine à la domination polonaise en créant l’hetmanat cosaque.
Population
Les chiffres de la population de Khmelnytskyï sont issus de recensements de la population, sauf pour 1900, 1907, 1920, 1973, 1995 et 2005, où ils sont des estimations. La population de 1943 provient de l’administration allemande d’occupation[1].
