Un animateur clé ou animateur de clés (key-animator en anglais) est un animateur de dessin animé de niveau supérieur à l'intervalliste. Il est le créateur de l'animation. Il dessine les images-clés, qui déterminent les étapes principales de la décomposition d'un mouvement, assurant le rythme et le style de celui-ci. C'est lui qui invente le jeu des personnages ou la dynamique de n'importe quel type d'objet (accessoires, éléments naturels, effets spéciaux, décors en mouvement...). Les intervallistes se chargeront d'interpoler ces images pour réaliser l'animation complète.
Ce métier requiert une bonne connaissance des codes de l'animation, de la physiologie (animaux et corps humain), de la représentation de l'espace, mais aussi de l'imagination. En effet, il travaille d'après les dessins du character designer qui a créé le personnage et les accessoires, ou ceux du layout-man qui a conçu les décors. Il suit les indications du story-board et les directions du réalisateur.
