Sa création résulte de la signature le 27 juillet 1953 du Korean Armistice Agreement (« Accord d'armistice coréen ») mettant officiellement fin à la guerre de Corée.

- Le 18 août 1976, pendant une mission d'élagage et de déboisement d'arbres dans la DMZ, deux officiers de la Force de Sécurité commune (JSA) américano-sud-coréenne sont assassinés par des soldats nord-coréens. Cet épisode est connu sous l'appellation de "Axe Murder Incident".
- La JSA est le cadre de l'intrigue dans le film homonyme du réalisateur sud-coréen Park Chan-wook.
- Le JSA permet aux coréens du Nord et ceux du Sud, sur quelques dizaines de mètres, de dialoguer de part et d'autre de la frontière. Il est surveillé jour et nuit.
