John Taliaferro Thompson (3 décembre 1860 - 21 juin 1940) était un officier de l'armée américaine surtout connu pour avoir inventé une arme, le Thompson (pistolet mitrailleur).
Né à Newport, dans le Kentucky, Thompson est le fils d'un lieutenant-colonel de l'armée, vétéran de la guerre de sécession.
