John Moloney est né le 27 août 1949 à Limerick (Irlande). C’est un ancien joueur de rugby à XV, qui a joué avec l'équipe d'Irlande de 1972 à 1980, évoluant au poste de demi de mélée.
Carrière
Il a eu sa première cape internationale le 29 janvier 1972, à l’occasion d’un match contre l'équipe de France dans le cadre du Tournoi des cinq nations. Son dernier match international fut aussi pendant le Tournoi des cinq nations, le 15 mars 1980 contre le Pays de Galles.
Moloney a fait partie de l'équipe d'Irlande qui a gagné le Tournoi des cinq nations en 1973 et 1974, sous la conduite de son capitaine Willie-John McBride.
Il a été quatre fois capitaine de l'équipe d'Irlande.
