John Holker

John Holker

John Holker (né à Stretford (près de Manchester), Angleterre) le 14 octobre 1719, mort à Montigny le 27 avril 1786) est un manufacturier anglais.

Biographie

Engagé dans l'armée de Charles Édouard Stuart, il est fait prisonnier à la tour de Londres pour y être pendu. Il parvient à s'en échapper et rejoint la Hollande puis la France.

Il fonde en 1752 la Manufacture royale de velours et de draps de coton (dont l'un des bâtiments fut construit par François Cointeraux) dans le quartier Saint-Sever à Rouen.

En 1755, Trudaine le nomme Inspecteur Général des manufactures.

Il est naturalisé français en 1766.

En 1768, il fonde à Saint-Sever la première fabrique en France de vitriol (acide sulfurique).
