John Bennet[1] (né autour de 1575 et mort après 1614) était un compositeur anglais de la Renaissance, membre de l'École anglaise de madrigal, un groupe de compositeurs qui ont participé à l'intense développement de ce genre musical en Angleterre entre 1588 et 1627[2].

En 1599, il publie un recueil de 17 pièces Madrigalis to Foure Voyces. Parmi ses principaux madrigaux, on peut noter All creatures now are merry minded publié en 1601 dans The Triumphs of Oriana, ouvrage collectif des madrigalistes anglais. Mais aussi Weep, O Mine Eyes, morceau qui rend un hommage à son contemporain John Dowland. Bennet y reprend en effet une partie de la plus célèbre pièce de Dowland, Flow my tears[3], également connue en tant que pavane sous le titre Lachrymae Antiquae.
