Institut royal du patrimoine artistique

L'Institut royal du patrimoine artistique (en néerlandais : Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium – KIK), en abrégé IRPA , est un établissement scientifique fédéral belge, fondé en 1948, et qui a trait à l'histoire de l'art en Belgique.

L'institut est composé de trois départements où les historiens de l'art, photographes, chimistes, physiciens et conservateurs-restaurateurs travaillent en interdisciplinarité ; les départements sont eux-mêmes subdivisés en sections.

Documentation

Ce département est constitué de trois sections, Inventaire et ateliers photographiques, Banques de données et Valorisation et Communication. Il gère et enrichit l'inventaire photographique de l'IRPA : plus de 850 000 clichés en rapport avec l'art en Belgique (monuments, sites, sculpture, peinture, textile, céramique, archéologie, folklore, etc.). Ces photographies datent parfois de la fin du XIXe siècle et reproduisent parfois aussi des monuments ou objets aujourd'hui disparus.

Ce fonds photographique s'est constitué peu à peu. On peut indiquer trois grandes phases d'acquisition :

  • il y a d'abord les clichés de l'inventaire du patrimoine culturel belge, effectué lors de la Première Guerre mondiale par les autorités d'occupation allemandes ;
  • ensuite les prises devues effectuées à la demande du Commissariat général à la protection aérienne passive entre 1940 et 1945 ;
  • enfin, le Répertoire photographique du Mobilier des Sanctuaires de Belgique, entamé en 1967 et achevé en 1983.

L'accès à la bibliothèque et à la phototèque est gratuit. Depuis 1989, une base de données électronique est constituée : à terme, la photothèque deviendra l'une des plus riches bases de données d'images au monde accessible en ligne.
