L'Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, basé à Muirfield (Écosse), est le plus vieux club de golf du monde, bien que le jeu existait auparavant. Il est créé en 1744 quand il mit en place les treize premières "règles de golf" (repris ensuite par la Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews) avant d'organiser le premier tournoi de golf joué Leith. Depuis, le club a déménagé, d'abord en 1836 à Musselburgh puis en 1891 à Muirfield.
C'est en ce dernier endroit, Muirfield, qui se dispute parfois l'Open britannique depuis 1892.
