Henry Stuart dit Lord Darnley (7 décembre 1545 – 9 ou 10 février 1567), duc d'Albany et roi consort d'Écosse, fut le second époux de sa cousine Marie Ire d'Écosse, reine d'Écosse.

Biographie

Il était le fils de Matthew Stewart, 4e comte de Lennox, et de Margaret Douglas, nièce du roi Henri VIII d'Angleterre et demi-sœur du roi Jacques V d'Écosse.

Il épousa en 1565, à l'âge de 20 ans, Marie Stuart, reine d'Écosse, sa cousine, qui avait conçu pour lui une vive passion. Par ce mariage, il devint duc d'Albany.

Ils eurent en 1566 un fils qui régna, dès 1567, sous le nom de Jacques VI d'Écosse. Celui-ci succéda plus tard en 1603 à Élisabeth Ire sous le nom de Jacques Ier d'Angleterre.

Il persécuta tous ceux qu'il croyait les favoris de la reine, et fit mettre à mort, dans l'appartement même de Marie Stuart, David Rizzio, secrétaire de la reine (1566), qu'il soupçonnait. Il périt lui-même dans la nuit du 9 février/10 février[1] 1567, étouffé dans le jardin, après que la maison où il se trouvait a explosé. Marie Stuart et Bothwell furent accusés de ce meurtre.
