Gwilym Ellis Lane Owen (1922-1982) était un philosophe britannique spécialisé dans l'histoire de la philosophie antique. Il a enseigné à Oxford puis à Harvard. Ses articles ont exercé une influence considérable sur des universitaires tels que Julia Annas, Jonathan Barnes, Miles Burnyeat, Gail Fine, Terence Irwin, Martha Nussbaum ou encore Richard Sorabji. Il a organisé (avec Ingemar Düring) le premier Symposium Aristotelicum. Il est l'auteur du concept de focal meaning[1]. À l'instar de Werner Jaeger et William David Ross, il est considéré comme l'un des principaux représentants de la méthode génétique en histoire de la philosophie.
