Gopi est un terme sanscrit (गोपी) qui signifie "gardienne de vaches".
Dans le Sanatana Dharma (Hindouisme), on évoque les Gopi (ou Gopika) en référence au groupe de jeunes gardiennes de vaches entièrement dévouées à Krishna.
De nombreuses histoires populaires circulent en Inde sur les péripéties de la vie amoureuse de Krishna et des Gopi.
Cette dévotion inconditionnelle à Krishna symbolise la dévotion (Bhakti) à Dieu. Le Bhâgavata Purâna rapporte ces histoires pour illustrer la voie de la dévotion.
