Alban Butler, prêtre catholique anglais, né en octobre 1710 dans le comté de Northampton, il fut ordonné prêtre en 1734 et il est mort le 15 mai 1773 à Saint-Omer (Artois).

Il étudia au collège anglais de Douai, y enseigna ensuite la philosophie et la théologie, et devint principal du collège anglais de Saint-Omer.

II est auteur de la Vie des Saints, en anglais.

Cet ouvrage, parut pour la première fois en 1745, 5 volumes in-8; il a été depuis le XIXe siècle souvent réimprimé. Il a reçu de grandes augmentations, et a été traduit par les abbés Jean-François Godescard (chanoine de Saint-Honoré) et Joseph-François Marie, 1784 12 volumes, 1808 (à Toulouse) 13 volumes in-8, 1836 14 volumes in-8.

Son neveu est Charles Butler.
