Fritz the Cat (en français Fritz le Chat) est un personnage de comics américain créé par Robert Crumb dans les années 1960.

Figure marquante des comics underground, cette bande dessinée pour adulte fut notamment adaptée dans deux films, dont un par Ralph Bakshi en 1972.

Le comics

Fritz est le premier personnage créé par Crumb. L'auteur l'a créé quand il était enfant pour une bande dessinée qu'il réalisait avec son frère Charles. Fritz était au départ un simple chat nommé Fred mais en grandissant Crumb lui donna des caractéristiques humaines pour aboutir à la version définitive lors de son adolescence.

Crumb inséra occasionnellement des éléments autobiographiques dans le comics, notamment des références à ses propres mésaventures sexuelles . La première histoire parut dans le numéro 22 du magazine Help en 1965. Cette histoire, intitulée Fritz Comes on Strong, voit Fritz ramener une jeune femelle chez lui et la déshabiller pour lui enlever des puces.

Le comics fut ensuite publié dans plusieurs autres magazines, Cavalier, Fug, et The People's Comics. Il eut son premier album complet en 1969.

Premier film

Fritz connut un regain de popularité avec la sortie du premier film tiré de la série, simplement intitulé Fritz the Cat. Réalisé par Ralph Bakshi et produit par Steve Krantz, ce film sorti en 1972 est le premier film d'animation classé X et réservé aux adultes.

Durant la production, le distributeur initial, la Warner Bros. Pictures, rejeta le projet après avoir visionné quelques minutes de la version de travail. Crumb lui-même rejeta ce film animé, ce qui ne l'empêcha pas d'être un grand succès critique et générationnel.

La mort de Fritz

Le rejet de ce film par Crumb alla jusqu'à lui inspirer un nouvel épisode de Fritz dans lequel il tue son personnage.

Dans l'histoire Fritz the Cat Superstar publiée en 1972, Fritz est dépeint comme une star d'Hollywood arrogante et exploitée par ses producteurs et son agent (caricaturant Bakshi et Krantz). Alors qu'il conduit sur Sunset Boulevard, Fritz est appelé par une fan lapine qui lui demande de la violer. Plus tard dans l'histoire, après avoir rencontré une ancienne amie autruche, Fritz quitte son appartement lorsque tout à coup il reçoit un coup de pic à glace dans le dos. Fritz est mort.

Second film

La mort de Fritz sur le papier n'empêcha pas la sortie d'un second film: The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat. Sortie en 1974, cette suite encore produite par Krantz mais dirigée cette fois-ci par Robert Taylor (toujours sans l'aval de Crumb) n'eut ni la qualité ni le succès du premier film.
