Forest People est une marque de cosmétiques biologique, issus du commerce équitable. Elle a été fondée en 2001 par Isabelle Trunkowski et Jérémie Déravin. Le projet initial est de valoriser les savoir-faire traditionnels et contribuer au maintien et au renforcement de la biodiversité.

À l'origine, un projet en Amazonie Brésilienne avec la Communauté de Santo Domingos qui vit dans la forêt nationale du Tapajos - 600 000 hectares - au cœur de la Forêt Brésilienne, et un constat :

  • La production d'huiles végétales (Andiroba, Copaïba et Péquïa) était sur le point d'être stoppée faute de rentabilité
  • Les productrices avaient abandonné l'atelier pour se consacrer à des tâches plus rémunératrices (coupe de bois)
  • Le litre d'Andiroba était rémunéré entre 5 et 8 reais (1,5 - 2 euros) sur le marché local

À la suite à cette première filière, 3 autres ont été mises en place (Huiles essentielles de Madagascar, Huile d'Argan du Maroc, Beurre de Karité du Burkina Faso) et une nouvelle filière d'Huiles essentielles devrait voir le jour en 2007 en Amazonie Guyanaise.

Aujourd'hui, Forest People travaille avec :

  • 49 familles bénéficiaires de la filière en Amazonie Brésilienne[réf. nécessaire]
  • 150 familles bénéficiaires de la filière à Madagascar[réf. nécessaire]

Depuis 2001, Forest People est membre de la Plate Forme du Commerce Equitable[1].
