Fluxion

En mathématiques, Fluxion est le terme utilisé par le mathématicien Isaac Newton pour désigner la dérivée d'une fonction. Newton définit ainsi une fluxion par le "quotient ultime de deux accroissements évanescents".

En effet, on dit d'une fonction f:\,\mathcal{I}\rightarrow\R qu'elle est dérivable en a\in \mathcal{I} lorsque la fonction taux d'accroissement en a : \mathcal{I}-\{a\}\rightarrow\R,\ x\mapsto \frac{f(x)-f(a)}{x-a} admet une limite finie en a. On note alors

f'(a) = \lim_{{x \to a\atop x\ne a}}{\frac{f(x)-f(a)}{x-a}},

ce que traduit bien la définition donnée par Newton.
